Chair
Hoyoung Huh, M.D., Ph.D. is President and Chief Executive Officer of South San Francisco-based BiPar Sciences, an oncology drug development company focused on the development of novel DNA repair inhibitors for breast, ovarian, lung, and other cancers. BiPar was recently acquired by the French pharmaceutical firm sanofi-aventis for $500 million. BiPar is now an independent, wholly owned subsidiary and center of innovation within sanofi-aventis.
Dr. Huh was previously a member of the Board of Directors, Chief Operating Officer, and Head of the PEGylation Business Unit at Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ: NKTR), a drug development company focused on oncology, CNS/pain, diabetes and infectious diseases. At Nektar, Dr. Huh engineered and led significant, partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies, including Bayer, Baxter, Novartis, and Pfizer.
Prior to Nektar, Dr. Huh was a Partner at McKinsey and Company, where he was a leader in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors in the United States, Europe and Asia, with areas of expertise in innovation management, technology and product licensing, mergers and acquisitions, and product launches.
As an industry thought leader, Dr. Huh speaks frequently about technology licensing, mergers and acquisitions, product development, and commercialization strategies. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Facet Biotech (NASDAQ: FACT), BayBio (biotechnology industry association), SciDose (private biotech), and Interplast (medical nonprofit).
Dr. Huh holds an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, a Ph.D. in Genetics/Cell Biology from the Cornell University/Sloan-Kettering Institute, and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Dartmouth College. TOP^
Ashley Dombkowski, Ph.D.
Dr. Ashley Dombkowski is a Managing Director with MPM Capital and is a member of the firm’s Investment Committee. Before joining MPM, she was a public market investor and Healthcare Equity Analyst covering biotech, medical device, and pharmaceutical stocks for Tiger Management, L.L.C., a diversified hedge fund. Prior to Tiger, Dr. Dombkowski followed the all-cap universe of public medical technology stocks at Dresdner RCM Global Investors.
Dr. Dombkowski holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Rice University and a B.A. cum laude and with Departmental Honors from Wellesley College. Her board involvement has included BioVitrum, EpiZyme, Enteromedics, LXN Corporation, iPierian, Peptimmune, Poniard, Portola, Rigel Pharmaceuticals, and Tercica. TOP^
Carl Goldfischer, MD
Carl Goldfischer, MD, is an Investment Partner and Managing Director of Bay City Capital, serving as a member of the board of directors and executive committee, and has been with the firm since December 2000. His background includes extensive public and private investment and transaction work, as well as clinical trial development knowledge. Prior to joining Bay City Capital, Dr. Goldfischer was, until mid-2000, Chief Financial Officer of ImClone Systems where he oversaw financial operations and strategic planning. Previously, he was a Research Analyst with the Reliance Insurance Company, helping to establish its portfolio and presence in the health care investment community.
Dr. Goldfischer serves on the board of directors of numerous companies, including: BrainCells, EnteroMedics, Epizyme, MAP Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, Poniard Pharmaceuticals, and PTC Therapeutics. He received an MD with honors in Scientific Research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. TOP^
Robert Gould, Ph.D.

Dr. Gould is currently Director, Novel Therapeutics, The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. The Institute is a research collaboration involving faculty, professional staff and students from throughout the MIT and Harvard academic and medical communities and is governed jointly by the two universities. It was founded in 2003 through the far-sighted generosity of philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. The Broad Institute's mission is to empower creative scientists to construct new powerful tools for genomic medicine, to make them accessible to the global scientific community, and to apply them to the understanding and treatment of disease. The Novel Therapeutics platform, formed in December 2006, is designed to achieve the last of these goals.
Gould retired from Merck Research Labs in 2006 where he was Vice President, Licensing and External Research. For the three years prior to that position he was Vice President, Basic Research, Merck Research Labs, in Pennsylvania where he oversaw strategic direction and drug discovery activities for multiple therapeutic areas, as well as MRL's centralized high throughput screening and imaging facilities. In three years approximately 20 compounds in 7 different therapeutic areas entered into further development.
Dr. Gould obtained degrees from Spring Arbor College, Michigan (1976) and The University of Iowa (1981). After post-doctoral studies at The Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, he joined Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Labs where he remained until retiring and joining the Broad Institute. Dr. Gould has published over 90 peer-reviewed publications and 16 patents. TOP^
David M. Mott
David M. Mott joined NEA in September 2008 as a General Partner focused on biopharmaceutical investments. Prior to joining NEA, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of MedImmune, subsidiary of AstraZeneca Plc, and Executive Vice President of AstraZeneca. Dave joined MedImmune in 1992 and served in roles of increasing responsibility including Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, President and Chief Executive Officer as the company grew from a venture-backed startup (founded in 1988) into one of the top five biotechnology companies in the world. Ultimately, he initiated and executed the sale of MedImmune to AstraZeneca in June 2007 for $15.6 billion. In 2002, Dave founded MedImmune Ventures and chaired its investment committee through his departure from MedImmune. At the time of his departure in July 2008, MedImmune had annual revenues in excess of $1.5 billion, annual R&D in excess of $650 million and approximately 3,000 employees.
Prior to joining MedImmune, Dave was a Vice President in the Health Care Investment Banking Group at Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. Inc. At Smith Barney, his activities included public and private equity and debt financings as well as merger and acquisition work for biotechnology, healthcare services, and medical product and device companies.
Dave is currently Chairman of 3-V Biosciences and Zyngenia and a director of Ardelyx and Zosano Pharma, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Scripps Translational Science Institute and the Governing Board of St. Albans School. TOP^
Richard F. Pops
Mr. Pops serves as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alkermes. He assumed the role of Chairman of the Board in April 2007 and he previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Alkermes from February 1991 through April 2007. Under his leadership, Alkermes has grown from a privately held company with 25 employees to a publicly traded pharmaceutical company with more than 500 employees and two commercial products.
Mr. Pops currently serves on the Board of Directors of: Alkermes, Inc.; Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc.; CombinatoRx, Inc.; Acceleron Pharma, Inc.; the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO); the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows. Beth Seidenberg, M.D.
Beth joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in May 2005 to work in the life sciences area. For the past 20 years, she has focused her career on introducing new innovative treatments for AIDS, arthritis, asthma, cancer, psoriasis, cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological and renal disorders. She introduced 10 innovative products to market and achieved over 40 regulatory approvals (including new indications and formulations) on a worldwide basis. These products have been successfully commercialized and have provided benefits to millions of patients with grievous illnesses and have generated several billion dollars of revenue.
Prior to joining KPCB, Beth was Senior Vice President, Global Development, and Chief Medical Officer at Amgen, Inc., the world’s largest biotechnology company. During Beth’s three years there, her responsibilities included: all stages of clinical research, regulatory affairs, safety, health economics/ reimbursement and medical affairs. During her tenure, five innovative products were approved for commercial use. Prior to joining Amgen, Beth was a senior executive in research and development at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Merck & Co., Inc. She began her career in basic and clinical research at the National Institutes of Health specializing in immunology and infectious diseases.
Beth received her BS from Barnard College magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa; and her medical degree from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine, alpha omega alpha. Her post-graduate training was completed at Johns Hopkins, George Washington School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. She is a member of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Advisory Board and Barnard College Science Advisory Board. TOP^
Kazumi Shiosaki, Ph.D.
Kazumi Shiosaki is the Founding CEO of Epizyme.
She also serves as a Managing Director at MPM Capital. At MPM, she has worked closely with a number of the firm’s portfolio companies to advance their small molecule development programs including Hypnion, Aryx, and Oxagen. She also started Primera Diagnostics in 2004, a molecular diagnostics company focused on infectious disease and oncology products and served as the company’s first CEO.
Prior to MPM, Kazumi was the SVP of Scientific Development as well as SVP of Drug Discovery at Millennium Pharmaceuticals. At Millennium, Kazumi was involved in helping to secure, as well as to manage, a number of the large corporate alliances in genomic targets (Bayer), metabolic diseases (Abbott) and in inflammation (Aventis).
Kazumi began her industrial career at Abbott Laboratories where she worked on drug discovery programs in a number of therapeutic areas including Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, and Infectious Disease.
Kazumi received her Ph.D. in Synthetic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. from Whitman College.
